Dialogue & Dignity Series: Edina Leković
|
The Dialogue & Dignity Series continues this week with Edina Leković, the inaugural Community Scholar in the Community Bridges Residency at UCLA.
Leković has more than two decades of expertise in storytelling, communications, media, leadership development and interfaith community building. She also serves as the executive director of the Robert Ellis Simon Foundation, which supports mental wellness services for L.A. County’s most vulnerable residents. Her research on Muslim communities in Los Angeles informed public programs and K–12 learning associated with “Engaging Lived Religion in the 21st Century Museum.” Leković also led the research and conducted oral interviews for “Visual and Sonic Landscapes of Muslims in Los Angeles.”
Wednesday, Feb. 14:

- 10 a.m. session in Memorial Building 331: “Supporting Belonging for Muslim, Arab and South Asian Students” (Student Life and other student-facing offices).
- Noon luncheon in Memorial Building 331: “How Islamophobia Hits Home at Whitman: A Conversation About Belonging & Healthy Conflict” (for students, staff and faculty).
- 2–5 p.m. open office hours in Memorial Building 326.
- 7 p.m. public talk in Olin Auditorium: “Groundhog Day: Weaponizing Islamophobia for War & Votes.”

Women’s Swimming Wins NWC Championship
|
This past weekend, the Whitman women’s swimming team won the 2024 Northwest Conference Championship—for the sixth time in the past seven years. Shaye Agnew ’25 was also named the NWC Co-Women’s Swimmer of the Year. The Whitman men’s swimming team finished the competition in second place and Andrew Hanson ’24 set a new Whitman record time (1:52:25) in the 200m butterfly.

Creator’s Talk and Reception on Thursday
|
In conjunction with the new exhibit now open at Sheehan Gallery, Whitman College will host a Creator’s Talk with Sebastian A. Jones on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. in the Kimball Theatre at Hunter Conservatory. A reception will follow. Jones is the founder of Stranger Comics and author of “Niobe, The Untamed” and other titles from the Asunda Universe.

Take the Campus Sustainability Plan Survey
|
Whitman College is currently working with consultants GreenerU and Cascadia to draft a Campus Sustainability Plan. This week, we are asking the community to participate in a public survey to provide feedback on the current goals set for the plan. Next week, there will be several in-person listening sessions providing more opportunities for the Whitman community to learn more and provide feedback. (Flyer attached.)

Volunteer Opportunity with the Stream Team
|
The Stream Team seeks volunteers to help clean up the Brewer Wetland on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 1–4 p.m. This large project will require 20–40 people to remove plastic tarps from the area to make room for new planting projects. Transportation will be provided for those that need it. Please sign up in advance. (Flyer attached.)

This weekend, recording began on the second season of the “Our Whitman, My Story” podcast, a collaboration between the Office of Communications and podcaster and writer John Moe ’90 (pictured left, with Astrid Ketcham ’24 on the right). The first season of the podcast won Gold at the 2023 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards.
