Division of Diversity and Inclusion: Spring Update
|
Feature by the Division of Diversity and Inclusion:
|
The Division of Diversity and Inclusion has been actively contributing to institutional efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism at the college. The work of the Division is trifurcated operationally and exercises horizontal influence across the institution. Our three operational areas include: Identity and Belonging, Equity and Compliance, and Inclusive Excellence.
Highlights since our fall semester update include the following:

- LGBTQIA+ Student Services:
- Launched a weekly “Queer Coded” discussion group.
- Started planning for “Lavender Graduation.”
- Intercultural Center:
- Organized Martin Luther King Jr. Day peace march.
- Developed a series of events to celebrate Black brilliance during Black History Month.
- Religious and Spiritual Life:
- Provided support during moments of tragedy and created spaces for reflection and conversation.
- Partnered with two local religious organizations to provide on-campus opportunities.
- International Student and Scholar Services:
- Organized a ceremony where first year United World College (UWC) students received a glass globe representing their leadership potential and commemorating their Whitman experience (pictured above).
- Supported international students who stayed on campus during break.
- Equity and Compliance:
- Compiled data from disclosures of sex and gender-based misconduct during the 2021–2022 academic year.

Santana-Acuña Co-Publishes Book
|
Associate Professor of Sociology Álvaro Santana-Acuña recently published a new book in collaboration with Arturo Rodríguez Morató and eleven other colleagues. “Sociology of the Arts in Action” (2023, Palgrave Macmillan) offers new perspectives on creation, production, and reception across traditional and emerging artistic domains, including literature, theater, dance, architecture, cooking, pop music and sports.

Boyer House Mailing Services Closed Today
|
Boyer House Mailing Services will be closed today, resuming normal operation tomorrow. The campus post office at Reid Campus Center will be open today as usual.
|
Maxey Museum Exhibit Lecture Tomorrow
|
Whitman alum Mark Giordano ’88 will deliver a talk titled “Imagining the Nation: The Role of Maps in Identity-Formation” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 in Kimball Theatre. Giordano will reference maps from his own collection that are currently on display as part of the current exhibition in Maxey Museum, “Mapping India: Colonialism, Nationalism, and the Partition of South Asia.” An opening reception for the exhibition will follow in Maxey Museum.

Plant Communication Lecture Tomorrow
|
Suzanne Simard, Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, will deliver the 2022–2023 Arthur G. Rempel Lecture in Biology at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 in Maxey Auditorium. Simard will profile her research on plant communication and her work with The Mother Tree Project, a large-scale experiment she initiated in 2015. Simard is the author of the 2021 best-selling book “Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest.”

Off-Campus Rental Applications Due Friday
|
Students looking for off-campus housing for the 2023–2024 school year should submit their applications using the online portal by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. Selection is first come, first served. For more information, visit the Off-Campus Rentals webpage.

Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Additional masks and rapid test kits are available in the front entryway at the Welty Student Health Center during normal operating hours.
