In just a few days, hundreds of students will be returning to Whitman’s residence halls to start the spring semester. They will be greeted by new Resident Advisors, who have just completed 11 days of training on activities and programming, student development theory, communication and having difficult conversations, self awareness and building inclusive community.

Leading this training and coordinating so many other aspects of the student campus experience are the Residence Life staff, led by Associate Dean of Students Campus Life Nancy Tavelli and Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing Andrew Johnson. Developing young leaders and imparting skills that will last a lifetime are integral to the work Tavelli and Johnson do as they build strong and confident teams of RAs and RDs.

Further support comes from Monica Chapman, housing coordinator, Cory Kiesz, custodial supervisor, and six Resident Directors (RDs): Molly Burchfield (Jewett Hall & Douglas Hall), Blythe Eickerman (Lyman House), Holden Gaupo (Anderson Hall & the Interest House Community), Callie Gilchrist (North Hall & College House), Ananda Gupta (Stanton Hall) and Quinn Sykora (Prentiss Hall).

Gupta, who came to Whitman as an international student, says that the sense of community residence life staff created during his first year inspired him to become an RD following graduation so that he could do the same for a new generation of students. That transition from Whitman student to Whitman staff has been eye-opening in many ways, notes Gilchrist, who appreciates the bigger picture she now has about administrative processes and how the college operates.

In both behind-the-scenes work (like choosing comfortable and durable furniture) and the more dramatic crisis care of accompanying students to the ER (which every RD did at least once in the fall semester) residence life staff consistently demonstrate their deep commitment to the well-being of all Whitman students.

Community Learning Days for Staff and Faculty

The Whitman Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (WIDE) Committee is pleased to welcome all Whitman faculty and staff to the second-annual Community Learning Days. These sessions will take place virtually on January 11 from 10–11:30 a.m. and January 14 from 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

This year WIDE is partnering with Inclusion Design Group (IDG). IDG will offer the first session on January 11, focused on developing an inclusive mindset of shared understanding and communal language to integrate belonging and inclusion into our day-to-day practices.

The second session on January 14 will focus on practicing an inclusive mindset framework through interactive discussion, activities, and strategies to interrupt bias and support those who respond to diversity and inclusion-related interpersonal and institutional conversations.

COVID-19 Cases on Campus

Positive COVID-19 cases in our campus community are noted in Whitman Today in compliance with state regulations. We also update the data in our COVID-19 Dashboard every Monday.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that in the past 24 hours, thirteen people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19. These people are now in isolation for 10 days in accordance with our campus and CDC guidelines. Though the likelihood of transmission is low due to our campus COVID-19 protocols, it is possible that others may have been exposed to COVID-19. There is nothing you need to do at this time aside from following our campus COVID-19 protocols. Anyone identified through the contact tracing process as a close contact (within 6 ft. for at least 15 minutes over 24 hours) will be personally notified.
