Pášxapa Powwow

I am pleased to invite the Whitman community to the inaugural Pášxapa Powwow which will take place tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 18 in the multipurpose gym at Sherwood Athletic Center.

Pášxapa, meaning Place of the Wild Sunflowers, is the Cayuse name for the Walla Walla Valley. By giving this name to our powwow and our powwow royalty, Miss Pášxapa, we honor the original inhabitants of this area at the same time that we welcome their descendants to return and hold this sacred event on Whitman’s campus.

A powwow is a cultural, social celebration that involves ceremonies, drumming, singing and dancing rooted in both ancient traditions and contemporary practice.

This powwow marks another step forward in the ongoing relationship supporting the Memorandum of Agreement between Whitman College and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

If you would like to learn more about powwows ahead of time, please join us for “Powwow 101,” tonight at 6 p.m. in Olin Auditorium. Fred Hill will provide an educational presentation that will include a demonstration of drumming, singing and dancing. This powwow etiquette guide may also be helpful.

I hope you can join us for this special and historic event!

Reminder: myWhitman and Colleague Downtime

In order to move to new servers, Technology Services will need to take Colleague, Self-Service and myWhitman offline for several hours. To minimize disruptions to campus, this downtime is scheduled to happen on Saturday, Nov. 18. Normal operation should resume by Sunday, Nov. 19, but there may be some intermittent disruptions.

Whitman Today Schedule Next Week

Since classes are not in session next week, and staff will be off the last part of the week, Whitman Today will only be published once next week, on Monday, Nov. 20. Content for this issue should be submitted to whitmantoday@whitman.edu by noon today.

Early Deadline for November Payroll

The timing of the upcoming break (Nov. 23–24), will result in a tighter timeline for payroll processing. Employees need to submit timesheets by end of day on Monday, Nov. 20 and supervisors need to approve them by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 21 (despite what the standard message from BambooHR will say). Supervisors must approve any time off prior to approving timesheets. Because of the short timeline, no corrections can be made after payroll processing begins. If you discover errors to timesheets after you sign the timesheet, please contact hr@whitman.edu and we will correct the error for December payroll. For this pay period, a full-time employee will report 176 hours.
