Looking Back at the Long Tent

The following excerpt is from "A Long Time Coming" by Director of Content Margie Reece '93, featured in the Fall issue of Whitman Magazine:
The April snow was unexpected. To some, it was a seasonal novelty, to others an annoyance. For Roger Amerman ’80, it was a sign. The Native gods, and their hallowed sky and land, offered a blessing of sorts. It was a “purifying blanket” for the day when a Long Tent would begin to take shape on the campus of Whitman College—on land where for centuries, Indigenous peoples cherished their home among the woodlands and waters in the shadow of the Blue Mountains.
That day, April 16, 2022, Amerman was on Ankeny Field outside of Maxey Hall, in the freshly falling snow, with a small team that would help him bring to life and show respect for a deeply meaningful and iconic element of Southern Plateau Tribal heritage.
Spirits were high as the group relished the physical work—after months of planning—and the significance of what they were doing. In a matter of hours and days, an impressive structure—an authentic plateau Long Tent—rose up.

Sempértegui Publishes Essay in the New York Review of Books
|
Assistant Professor Politics Andrea Sempértegui published an essay in The New York Review of Books, a national magazine that publishes literary and intellectual essays and reviews. The essay, titled "Ecuador's Historic Strike," explores how an Indigenous-led general strike wove together anti-neoliberal and anti-extractive demands, and articulated a broad grassroots coalition of Indigenous, rural and urban movements. It also offers a brief history of Ecuador's Indigenous movement and its political leadership.

The Road to Queerness Event Tomorrow
|
In honor of National Coming Out Day, LGBTQIA+ Student Services will host an event on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 4-6 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Coffee House. Students are invited to share an artistic performance that speaks to their own experience(s) with queerness. Students are also welcome to attend without sharing, and snacks will be provided.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Tomorrow
|
The Intercultural Center, Associated Students of Whitman College, and the Whitman Events Board will host a Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Reid Campus Center Young Ballroom. The event promises food, games, prizes and dancing!

French Film Screening Tomorrow
|
There will be a free screening of of the 2021 documentary "Marcher sur l'eu" ("Above Water") on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The film documents efforts to build a well in the village of Tatis, Niger in the larger context of global water scarcity. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Professor of French and Francophone Studies Jack Iverson and Associate Professor of History Jacqueline Woodfork.

New Health Center Email Address
|
The Welty Student Health Center has a new email address for questions, concerns, and general communications: healthcenter@whitman.edu. Students are encouraged to use this new email address for reporting COVID test results.

In accordance with Washington state Labor & Industries employer requirements, we are notifying the campus community that over the weekend, four people with Whitman access were confirmed positive for COVID-19.
Please continue to follow all our campus COVID-19 protocols to help prevent transmission. If you have any symptoms that may be COVID-19 or know that you may have been exposed to coronavirus, please be tested. Additional masks and rapid test kits are available 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Welty Student Health Center.
